1. AMUSE YOURSELF. Love theme parks and rollercoasters? No need to drop lots of cash at the home of the mouse ears. Check out your local offerings. Try www.sixflags.com and www.cedarfair.com for some of the bigger parks around the country; or just type "amusement parks" into maps.google.com to find places near you. Don't forget to check your local paper or local news website for county fairs and traveling carnivals as well. Most likely you'll find enough thrills to keep you busy every day of a week.
2. BE A HISTORY BUFF. Check your city or county's tourism bureau to find local historic sites. Who knows, you might discover anything – the childhood homes of famous authors to Civil War battlefields to Native American lands and much more.
3. GO CULTURAL. See a different play, musical, museum, opera, concert or dance performance every day. If you don't live in a place with cultural venues, try renting DVD's of shows and concerts.
4. MAKE YOUR OWN SPA AND FITNESS WEEK. Celebs spend a fortune on fancy spas, but you don't have to. Go to your gym or run or walk outside to get exercise; then pamper yourself at home. Have scented lotions, bath salts and candles on hand (available from the dollar store). Have some nice fluffy towels piled up along with a robe and slippers. You could even hire an in-home therapeutic massage expert to work the knots out of your tired muscles.

6. TAKE THE BOAT. Yes, there are places to get a cheap, or even free, boat ride. They're called ferries. Popular ferries include the Cape May-Lewes Ferry between New Jersey and Delaware ($8 round trip), or the Columbia River Ferry from Oregon to Washington, ($1 one-way). Maybe best of all (in my humble opinion) is the Staten Island Ferry between Staten Island and Manhattan, New York. This is 100% free, runs around the clock, and is operated by the city transit authority, providing a 25-minute boat trip across majestic New York Harbor, passing close by the famed Statue of Liberty and affording an amazing view of the lower Manhattan skyline. To find a ferry in your area, go to maps.google.com and search the map for "ferry".
Now, let's suppose you actually have a little money to play with. Our last four ideas are for real trips that won't cost much.
7. TRAVEL TO THE GULF COAST. While the Gulf Coast area is suffering from bad publicity due to the BP oil spill, there are still many clean beaches there, and some of the local resorts are offering promotional deals to lure vacationers. In Florida, for example, Sanibel Sunset Beach Resort offers a "Clean Beach Guarantee" — guests are entitled to a full refund if their vacation is disrupted because of the oil spill. Get lots of good travel information for the Gulf Coast at this site. Also check the Visit Florida tourism site for detailed information and live camera feeds of Gulf Coast beaches.
8. TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY TO OVERLOOKED PLACES. A similar principle applies with some foreign travel locations. For example, reports of drug wars have plagued Mexico, but in fact those problems are isolated and are not in tourist areas such as Cancun. Still, because of the rumors, you can find some excellent travel deals to places that might not have the best rep right now. Just be sure to check the U.S. Department of State Travel Warning page to make sure you avoid the problem spots.
9. TURN YOUR PROCRASTINATION INTO AN ADVANTAGE. Unsold hotel rooms and trips are often put on clearance. I just recently enjoyed a night at a very nice hotel in a popular beach town, in peak season, with the price marked down. The key in this case is that is was for a weeknight stay. You have to know what kind of bargaining power you may have. A hotel has a good chance of finding takers for a Saturday night room and probably won't cut you a deal. But a weeknight room could remain empty, so the hotel is more motivated to work with you on the price. Also try travelzoo.com and travelfleamarket.com for last minute travel deals.
10. GIVE CAMPING A TRY. Hotels still too costly for you? Try camping in a local, county, state, or national park. You may need to make reservations, so be prepared to plan ahead; campsites will be cheaper and more available after Labor Day. And if you don't have equipment, ask around. Chances are, a family member, friend, neighbor, or co-worker can lend you what you need.
